After election defeat: Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigns
PM steps down after government-backed presidential candidate fails – Political uncertainty looms over Bucharest
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu officially announced his resignation today, following the poor performance of the ruling coalition’s candidate in the first round of the presidential election.
Reason for the resignation
The move comes as a direct response to the electoral defeat of the government-supported candidate, backed by Ciolacu’s Social Democratic Party (PSD). The result was seen as a significant blow to Ciolacu’s leadership, as he had publicly championed the campaign.
In a brief statement, Ciolacu said:
“I take full political responsibility for the outcome, and I step down out of respect for the will of the people.”
Immediate consequences
His resignation throws the ruling coalition into uncertainty. Unless a new prime minister is quickly appointed and backed by parliament, the country could face a governmental reshuffle or even early parliamentary elections.
Who is Marcel Ciolacu?
Ciolacu, 56, became Prime Minister in mid-2023 as part of a rotating power-sharing agreement between major political parties. His tenure faced growing criticism over economic challenges and persistent corruption concerns.
What happens next
The Romanian President is expected to appoint a caretaker Prime Minister in the coming days, while coalition parties negotiate a path forward. If no agreement is reached, Romania could be headed toward a constitutional crisis during an already tense electoral year.
