Austria Now News – London
Chelsea deepened Manchester United’s crisis with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge to open the ninth round of the Premier League, on a bad day for both Manchester clubs, as leaders Manchester City also lost to Brighton.
Rogers and Palmer settle the match
The visitors put in a good first half, and Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside in the 34th minute. After the break, Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 50th minute.
United defender Lisandro Martínez was sent off after a second yellow card, and Cole Palmer converted the penalty in the 64th minute. Another Chelsea goal, scored by Estevão, was disallowed for offside in the 71st minute. Xabi Alonso’s side earned their fifth win of the season and provisionally sit fourth.
United’s worst start since 1986
It was the third straight defeat for Michael Carrick’s side, who are winless in their last eight matches in all competitions, following a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League and a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the league. The club is having its worst league start since 1986 and sits 17th.
Speculation about Carrick’s future is mounting, with British media naming Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte as possible successors.
City at risk of losing top spot
Manchester City, coached by Enzo Maresca, lost 1-0 to Brighton through an early goal from Swede Yasin Ayari in the 11th minute, their second consecutive defeat. A draw against Liverpool on Sunday at 17:30 Vienna time would be enough for Arsenal to go top.
As for the Austrian players, Kevin Danso was on the bench as Sunderland lost 3-1 to Coventry, while Xaver Schlager was substituted at half-time for Nottingham Forest, coached by Austrian Oliver Glasner, who have only six points after nine rounds.
