Austria Now News – Vienna
Authorities in Vienna were forced to evacuate a club holding around 200 guests during a large-scale inspection operation on Halloween night, after it emerged that its emergency exits were blocked by construction materials and machinery and that the escape route lighting had been installed in a misleading way.
Violations at half of the venues inspected
The City of Vienna’s rapid response unit, Gruppe Sofortmaßnahmen, together with the AMS, the events authority MA 36 and the market office MA 59, carried out inspections across the city on Friday and Saturday, covering 16 event venues and nightclubs.
At eight of them, immediate measures were taken due to imminent danger, including the removal of decorations. The main violations included flammable decorations, locked or obstructed emergency exits, a lack of fire extinguishers and faulty emergency exit lights. The operator of the overcrowded club was ordered to evacuate it immediately and complied.
Reports were also filed against four venues for loud music exceeding permitted limits to a degree that posed a health risk, in addition to 15 further reports by the city for violations of the Trade Act, the Vienna Youth Protection Act and other regulations.
Police tally: 509 reports
According to Vienna police, several hundred uniformed and plain-clothes officers were deployed across the city, with most interventions relating to the illegal use of firecrackers. Eight suspects were provisionally arrested for resisting authority or on suspicion of property damage, and 107 pyrotechnic items were seized. In total there were 509 reports, including 28 criminal complaints and 391 administrative offences.
In the Meidling district, a parked police car was damaged with a flammable liquid at around 21:50. During an immediate pursuit, a 16-year-old whose nationality has not been officially disclosed and a 19-year-old Austrian were arrested. They were later released, with the report against them forwarded to the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office.
