Austria Now News – Casablanca

Moroccan club Raja Club Athletic announced on Monday the dismissal of its Spanish coach Paco Jémez over the team’s declining results in the Moroccan professional league this season, days before an eagerly awaited clash with AS FAR (Armée Royale).

One win in five games

The decision came after Raja lost 2-0 to RS Berkane on Sunday, leaving the team with just one win in five matches since the start of the league, in 13th place out of 16 teams.

In a statement on social media, the club said the decision to part ways was taken following a comprehensive assessment of the team’s sporting situation, as the results, the quality of performances and the level of overall progress had not lived up to the club’s expectations and objectives.

The Spanish coach’s career

Jémez, 56, took charge of Raja last summer after a short spell as assistant to coach Nuno Espírito Santo at West Ham United, who were relegated from the English Premier League last season.

He previously coached Mexico’s Cruz Azul, Las Palmas and Iran’s Tractor, while his most notable spell was with Rayo Vallecano during his first stint from 2012 to 2016, before returning to the Spanish club in 2019 and staying until July 2020.

Showdown with AS FAR

Raja, who have reached the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, are preparing to face AS FAR next Wednesday in a top-of-the-table Moroccan league clash.
