Austria Now News – Austria
The organisers of the Giro d’Italia cycling race unveiled the route of the 110th edition on Tuesday in Rome. The race starts on 8 May 2027 in the Italian city of Trieste, with the first stage crossing the border into Slovenia – a move observers see as an attempt to lure Slovenian star Tadej Pogačar into taking part.
Two stages in Slovenia
The second stage starts in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana and finishes in the coastal town of Koper, before the race returns to Italy for the third stage. However, Pogačar’s participation appears unlikely, as he himself has said he will probably ride the Vuelta a España and the Tour de France.
Mountainous route and finale in Rome
After returning to Italy, the race heads south along the Adriatic coast, then climbs north from Naples towards the Alps. The Giro comprises 21 stages with a total elevation gain of 50,250 metres and ends in the capital Rome on 30 May. Its mountain highlights include the Passo Gavia and the Passo del Mortirolo, as well as the return of Monte Zoncolan after a six-year absence. The race also features two individual time trials, six flat stages and eight hilly stages.
An opportunity for Austria’s Felix Gall
The route could suit Austrian rider Felix Gall from East Tyrol, who finished second this year behind Dane Jonas Vingegaard. Although time trials are not his strength, the uphill time trial on stage seven and the tough climbs could encourage him to make his third Giro appearance. He has not yet announced his plans for next season.
The women’s Giro d’Italia will take place from 29 May to 6 June 2027, with a total elevation gain of 17,450 metres between Viareggio and the Alps. In East Tyrol, which did not receive a stage in the 2027 edition, tourism association chairman Franz Theurl hopes to host a stage in 2028.
