Austria Now News – Vorarlberg

Volunteer first responders, including several medical students and a specialist doctor, saved the life of a 47-year-old driver on Sunday afternoon after he lost consciousness at the wheel on the A14 motorway, known as the Rheintalautobahn, in Vorarlberg. Attempts to resuscitate him lasted around a full hour before they succeeded.

Repeated collisions with the concrete barrier

According to police, the driver was travelling on the A14 towards Tyrol. Shortly before the Dornbirn-Nord exit, he is believed to have lost consciousness due to a medical emergency. The car then struck the concrete barrier several times before finally coming to a stop on the exit lane leading to the motorway service area.

An hour of resuscitation

Several drivers travelling behind him stopped, pulled the man from his car and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Police said the volunteer first responders included several medical students as well as a specialist doctor. Together with the ambulance crews, they continued resuscitation efforts for nearly an hour until they managed to bring the man back to life. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance.

Lane closed for an hour

The car was badly damaged in the accident. The right-hand lane of the A14 was closed in the area of the accident for about an hour, although according to police this did not cause major traffic jams.

The incident shows the importance of first aid and swift intervention by bystanders in cases of cardiac arrest, as every minute that passes before resuscitation begins reduces the chances of survival.
